Hi!
Finally I have arrived to beautiful Trichy, I have been received
greatly by both staff and students so I am having a great time so far.
The horses are lovely to work with, although they have some opinions
about what they think is enjoyable work... I am taking things slowly to
begin with as the have been on a rather long spell. Long walks and
driving (without the wagon) to build them up again. The first day I was
rather chocked by their laziness, but after a couple of days training
and walks outside the center the have really been revitalized!
As the
photos show EQ and Koko have been allowed some water play which they
greatly appreciate. Bhardi and Ragelingan drove Nobel to
Pondicherri this Saturday, and stayed overnight to get the chance to
see how their stable works. So, Nobel has now left Intact EQ... . My
morning job is not only to look after the horses but also to participate
in the therapy. The children get to groom, ride and hose off the ponies
after their work. Koko is the main star for the riding therapy at the
moment. We used EQ for the first time today, as his back needs to
be strengthen more before he can do any longer work.
As I have never
worked with disabled children before this is a great experience for me.
In the equithearpy classes there are only three children at a time which
gives me the time to get to know these boys and girls more closely.
Most of them are autistic, but are really different as individuals,
with different preferences and needs. The afternoons I spend in the pool
with the other volunteer, Karina. We work in the water with the
children to teach them how to swim, or just to give them a feel of how
it is to move in the water.
One boy especially loves this, as he cannot
walk but nearly manages to do this by himself in the pool!
I am learning a great deal myself from Karina, so I hope I can continue
this work when she leaves. The rest of the time I spend in the
schoolyard, playing, ball etc, or in the newbuilt playhouse with some of
the girls. In other words, not a bad day! The second 'mission' I have
been given by Thomas is to photograph Intact's different centers. Last
week I visited the opportunity camp which
hopefully will be followed by Kalrayan hills this week-end. A great way
to explore the various activities of Intact... This is all I have to say
for now, but I will send more photos as time passes.
Best regards/ Julia
